Background of the Study
Electoral malpractice is a recurring issue that undermines the integrity of democratic systems, with far-reaching implications for political accountability. Electoral malpractices such as vote buying, ballot box snatching, and falsification of results compromise the electoral process, eroding public trust and weakening the mechanisms that hold political leaders accountable (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). In Lokoja Local Government, Kogi State, the persistence of such malpractices has sparked concerns about their impact on governance and accountability. Political leaders who gain power through fraudulent means are less likely to prioritize the welfare of their constituents, leading to ineffective representation and policy-making (Adeyemi & Garba, 2024). Despite various reforms aimed at curbing electoral malpractice in Nigeria, the problem remains prevalent, particularly at the local government level. This study seeks to examine the relationship between electoral malpractice and political accountability in Lokoja Local Government, providing insights into how compromised elections affect governance and citizen trust.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral malpractice remains a significant impediment to democratic consolidation in Lokoja Local Government, as it undermines the principles of free and fair elections. The lack of accountability among political leaders often stems from the flawed processes through which they attain power, resulting in governance failures and public disillusionment (Abdullahi & Okoro, 2023). While previous studies have explored electoral malpractice at the national level, limited attention has been given to its specific impact on local governance in Lokoja. This gap in knowledge necessitates a focused investigation to understand the extent to which electoral malpractices affect political accountability in the area.
